FAKE IS THE NEW DOPE (2024) Geike Arnaert opens Hooverphonic's new album with the beautiful track Fake Is The New Dope. On its fourteenth album, the band steers the ship towards an unknown universe. This time no familiar dream world or the atmosphere of a film noir, but rather reflective, eclectic and never boring! Alex Callier: At its core, it's about the strength it takes to get out of depression. Not a light subject in itself, but the album actually sounds hopeful and energetic. 'I didn't intend to make a reflective record, but certain themes inevitably crept into my songs. For example, the title track and opener Fake Is The New Dope describes how we all embrace fake in a certain way and fear it at the same time. This attraction and repulsion is very strong throughout the plate. It was an artistic choice to program the strings on this album. It has become a kind of hybrid sound between real and fake, between warm and cold, which leaves a lot of room for Geike's voice. The music is inspired by the electronic music of the 90s. We rediscover our own musical roots in a contemporary way.
